Canada’s PM announces early election amid U.S. tariff threats
(MENAFN) On Sunday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced an early election for April 28, promising to address U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff impositions and risks of annexation.
Carney, who became Prime Minister on March 14 after winning the Liberal leadership, stated that he is seeking a mandate from Canadians to confront Trump's actions and create a more inclusive economy.
Carney stated, "We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump's unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty." He further noted, "President Trump claims that Canada isn't a real country. He wants to break us, so America can own us. We will not let that happen."
The Prime Minister emphasized his vision for an enhanced economy and a more secure nation, stating, "There is so much more to do to secure Canada, to invest in Canada, to build Canada, to unite Canada. That's why I'm asking for a strong positive mandate from my fellow Canadians."
