QF's Zero-Waste Community Iftar Weaves Sustainable Message Into Ramadan
Doha, Qatar: Throughout the holy month of Ramadan, worshippers are breaking their daily fast while also learning about and embracing sustainability at Qatar Foundation's Education City – through joining its zero-waste community Iftar.
Taking place for the third year running at Minaretein (Education City Mosque), the volunteer-supported Iftar minimises waste through smaller portion sizes to reduce leftover food, eco-friendly multi-compartment food boxes, whole rather than packaged fruit, reusable table covers, and using water dispensers rather than plastic bottles. Any food waste produced is composted for use within Education City.
As well as reflecting the essence of the Holy Month, the community event has an educational aspect, encouraging worshippers to recognize and demonstrate the Islamic values of moderation, conservation, and responsibility to their community and the planet.
