Russian Investigative Committee accuses Ukrainian forces of committing war crimes in Kursk Region
(MENAFN) The Russian Investigative Committee has accused Ukrainian forces of committing war crimes in the town of Sudzha, Kursk Region, including looting, arson, and the killing of civilians. In a statement released on Sunday, military investigators confirmed they are gathering evidence from local residents to hold those responsible accountable.
Sudzha, the largest town captured by Ukrainian forces during their cross-border offensive, was recaptured by Russian troops earlier this month. Investigators claim multiple witness testimonies indicate that Ukrainian soldiers were ordered to target civilians.
According to the report, Ukrainian forces engaged in widespread looting between January and February 2025, setting fire to homes—sometimes with people still inside—and deliberately shelling residential areas, causing severe destruction.
Ukraine launched an incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region in August 2024, seizing Sudzha and several nearby villages. President Vladimir Zelensky stated the offensive was intended to strengthen Ukraine’s position in future peace talks. However, Russian forces quickly halted the advance and have since been reclaiming lost territory, now controlling approximately 86% of the previously occupied areas.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump recently acknowledged that thousands of Ukrainian troops remain trapped by Russian forces in Kursk Region. In response to Trump’s appeal, President Vladimir Putin assured that Ukrainian soldiers who surrender would be treated humanely and granted safe passage.
