Orban describes EU`s method towards Ukraine as ‘rudderless’

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has condemned the European Union’s approach to the Ukraine conflict, accusing Brussels of pursuing a misguided pro-war stance while Washington actively negotiates with both Moscow and Kiev to end the fighting.

Earlier this week, Hungary refused to support the EU’s joint statement on Ukraine following a European Council meeting in Brussels. The document reaffirmed the bloc’s unwavering position on the conflict and its commitment to supplying Ukraine with more weapons.

Speaking to Kossuth Radio on Friday, Orban described the EU’s strategy as “rudderless,” emphasizing that Europe risks becoming irrelevant in the peace process. He warned that Europeans could soon find themselves sidelined while the US brokers key agreements.

“There will be an American-Ukrainian agreement, an American-Russian agreement, and even a Russian-Ukrainian agreement brokered by them [the US],” Orban said, arguing that Brussels has mishandled its role in the conflict.

Since taking office on January 20, US President Donald Trump has launched diplomatic efforts to mediate a resolution. His Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, recently suggested that a full ceasefire between Kiev and Moscow could be reached within weeks.

Orban reiterated his long-standing criticism of the EU’s approach, warning that unless Brussels shifts away from its pro-war stance and adopts an independent European position, the future of the continent will be decided without its involvement. He urged EU leaders to align their strategy with that of the Trump administration, which he claims is working toward a peaceful resolution, while the EU continues to fuel the war.
