Moscow declares Ukrainian assault on gas facility considered act of terrorism

(MENAFN) Russia’s Investigative Committee has classified the attack on the Sudzha gas metering station near the Ukrainian border as an act of terrorism, launching a criminal investigation, according to an official statement. The incident occurred in Kursk Region early Friday morning.

The Sudzha station, previously used to transport Russian natural gas to European consumers via Ukraine, was damaged in a targeted bombing allegedly carried out by Ukrainian forces, the Investigative Committee reported. Russian authorities have vowed to identify and prosecute those responsible.

The strike comes just days after Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump agreed to a partial ceasefire, under which both sides pledged not to target each other’s energy infrastructure. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky was also part of the agreement.

Despite the ceasefire, the Russian Defense Ministry reported a Ukrainian strike on an oil depot in Krasnodar Region, calling it a provocation aimed at undermining Trump's peace initiative. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the Sudzha attack further proves Kiev cannot be trusted, though Russia continues to honor its commitment not to target Ukrainian energy sites.

The Russian Defense Ministry noted that Ukrainian forces previously occupied the Sudzha station after launching an incursion into Kursk Region last August, using it as a logistics hub. During their retreat, they allegedly deliberately destroyed the facility.

Kiev’s assault on Kursk was intended to seize Russian territory for leverage in negotiations, but Russian forces have since pushed Ukrainian troops out, reclaiming key positions, including Sudzha earlier this month.
