Social Media App X Sues Indian Government

(MENAFN) X, the social media app owned by US billionaire Elon Musk, has filed a lawsuit against the Indian government, accusing it of unlawfully removing content through an extensive censorship system, as reported by a news agency on Thursday.

The lawsuit, which was submitted earlier this month to a high court in Karnataka, claims that the Indian government has implemented a system that enables government agencies, state officials, as well as local police to issue widespread content removal orders.

X asserts that this so-called “censorship portal” infringes upon India's constitution and violates the Information Technology Act.

The lawsuit further argues that such actions “will result in significant censorship and unlawful blocking of lawful information on the X platform, which will prejudice X and detrimentally impact its business,” according to the report.

This legal action coincides with Musk’s efforts to broaden his business ventures in India, while Premier Narendra Modi faces growing pressure from United States Leader Donald Trump on both trade and immigration matters.

Shashank Reddy, managing partner at the tech-centered company Evam Law & Policy, informed the news agency that the issue has evolved beyond a mere legal matter. “This is no longer a single, simple issue about the interpretation of a specific section of law,” he explained. “It is a larger geopolitical issue.”
