Lebanese PM cautions against military escalation following Israeli claims

(MENAFN) Prime Minister Nawaf Salam of Lebanon expressed concern on Saturday about the potential for a renewed war in Lebanon, triggered by Israel's assertion that it had stopped three rockets fired from southern Lebanon at Metula.

This incident marked the first rocket attack of this nature as the beginning of the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel which took hold almost four months ago.

In his statement, Salam cautioned against “further military escalation on Lebanon’s southern border,” highlighting “the grave consequences it could have for Lebanon and its people.”

He stressed that “the continuation of hostilities could lead to a new war that would only bring destruction and suffering to the Lebanese people.”

According to Lebanese media, Israel carried out airstrikes in eastern South Lebanon and fired artillery at the town of Khiam within the Marjayoun district.

Salam also mentioned that he had spoken with Lebanese Defense Minister Michel Mounir and UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert. During his talks with Mounir, Salam emphasized the need for “decisive action to ensure that only the Lebanese state retains the authority to declare war or peace,” reiterating the government's “responsibility to manage the situation and prevent further military escalation.”
