German Embassy in Syria resumes following regime shift
(MENAFN) German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has reinstated Germany's embassy in Damascus, Syria, marking its reopening after a 13-year period of closure. This announcement was made by Stefan Schneck, Germany's special delegate to Syria, via social media.
In a post he shared on X, Schneck stated: "Minister Baerbock officially reopened Berlin's embassy in Damascus."
Schneck expressed the embassy's intent to collaborate with Syrians for the betterment of Syria, saying: "We are pleased to work closely with all Syrians for a better Syria." He also clarified that the embassy's current staff is “still small.”
He further noted: “The visa and consular affairs will remain managed from Beirut for the coming period."
The closure of numerous Arab and international diplomatic missions in Syria occurred following the violent suppression of pro-democracy demonstrations by the former regime of Bashar al-Assad in 2011.
After anti-regime forces seized control of Damascus on December 8th, ending the Baath Party's rule since 1963, Assad fled to Russia.
Ahmed al-Sharaa, the leader of the forces responsible, was appointed as interim president at the end of January.
