Another Russia-US discussions under preparations

(MENAFN) High-level U.S. and Russian officials are set to meet in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, this Sunday to continue negotiations on resolving the Ukraine conflict, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff revealed in an interview with Fox News.

According to Witkoff, the American delegation will be led by National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who will work with their Russian counterparts to finalize the terms of a potential ceasefire.

Discussing Tuesday’s phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Witkoff noted that the conversation focused on securing a ceasefire that includes a mutual agreement to avoid attacks on energy infrastructure.

“We need to work out the specifics. Until recently, there wasn’t a consensus on key issues like energy security, infrastructure, and a moratorium on military actions in the Black Sea. Today, we’ve made progress,” he explained.

Addressing concerns that Ukraine might use a proposed 30-day truce to rearm, Witkoff acknowledged the challenges involved and stated that further discussions will take place during the upcoming negotiations. However, he expressed confidence that a full ceasefire could be reached soon.

“The details matter, but we’re not far from an agreement,” he said.

Witkoff also described his recent meetings with Putin as productive, highlighting that their discussions—lasting several hours each—helped move negotiations forward.

The upcoming talks in Jeddah follow previous meetings in Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, where both sides agreed to work toward ending the conflict and strengthening diplomatic and economic ties. These discussions have been preceded by extensive phone conversations between Trump and Putin.
