UN head lauds progress in Cyprus discussions in Geneva

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday lauded the "meaningful progress" achieved in the informal discussions regarding the Cyprus issue, which took place over two days in Geneva, Switzerland.

The get-together, organized at Guterres' request, included Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, and representatives from Greece, Turkey, as well as Britain, the three guarantor nations.

Guterres emphasized that the discussions led to substantial progress, as both sides reached an agreement on a range of fresh trust-building initiatives, creating a "new atmosphere" for future negotiations.

Both sides also decided to hold another meeting in late July and assign a new UN Special Envoy for Cyprus, according to Guterres.

Guterres stated: "Mr. Tatar and Mr. Christodoulides have agreed on the following group of initiatives to build trust," highlighting "opening of the four crossing points, demining, creation of a technical committee on youth, initiatives on the environment and climate change including the impacts on mining areas; solar energy in the buffer zone and the restoration of cemeteries."
