Turkish authorities pass arrest warrant for Istanbul Mayor Imamoglu

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, Turkish officials passed an arrest warrant for Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, with police dispatched to his residence, according to media reports.

Police teams were seen searching Imamoglu's home, according to a news agency.
Imamoglu posted a video on X, stating, "Hundreds of police have gathered at my doorstep. We are facing a great tyranny. I entrust myself to the nation."

According to his statement on X, Murat Ongun, who serves as Imamoglu's press advisor, has also been detained.

The reason behind the detentions was not obvious right away.

However, Imamoglu's undergraduate diploma was cancelled out on Tuesday as a result of a probe by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, stemming from claims that his diploma was fraudulent.

In the course of February, Imamoglu formally submitted his application to be the presidential candidate for the Republican People's Party (CHP). The party will disclose its nominee during the congress on Sunday following a vote by its members.
