Civilian who shot down Ukrainian drone gets recognized by Russian parliament
(MENAFN) Alexander Yudayev, a Russian civilian who downed a Ukrainian kamikaze drone during a large-scale UAV attack on Moscow, was recognized by the State Duma on Tuesday for his bravery. Lawmakers awarded him a certificate of honor for his “personal contribution to the security of Russia’s citizens.”
State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin praised Yudayev’s decisive actions, stating, “When drones attacked Moscow, he didn’t just stand by—he took action. Our country is rich in heroes who step up to protect civilians. Let’s thank him and his parents for raising such a son.”
Yudayev, a military veteran and retired police officer, played a key role during Ukraine’s largest drone assault on March 11, when over 300 UAVs were intercepted across Russia. Of these, 91 reached Moscow Region before being shot down. Despite these efforts, at least three civilians lost their lives, and around 20 were injured due to falling debris.
When Yudayev spotted an incoming drone near his home in Moscow Region, he grabbed his shotgun and fired twice, successfully downing the UAV before it exploded upon impact.
“I simply did my duty as a citizen. Behind me were my hometown of Ozyory, the city of Moscow, and our great Motherland. I never doubted that I was doing the right thing. Thank you. I serve Russia!” Yudayev said while addressing lawmakers.
