Greece Highlights Importance of Discussions Following Cyprus Talks in Geneva
(MENAFN) Greece’s foreign Minister emphasized the need to keep communication open following an informal talk on Cyprus that took place in Geneva on Tuesday.
Talking to the press after the meeting, George Gerapetritis explained that the discussions focused on confidence-building measures between the involved parties.
These measures included topics such as demining, environmental protection, youth engagement, and the restoration of cemeteries.
Gerapetritis also noted that it was agreed during the meeting to appoint a personal envoy on behalf of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to oversee the next steps in the discussions.
The foreign minister mentioned that informal meetings will continue both bilaterally and in a broader format. The upcoming stage of meetings is anticipated to occur in July.
Despite recognizing that the position of the Turkish Cypriot side diverges from the framework established by the UN Security Council resolutions, Gerapetritis stressed the importance of maintaining dialogue to foster trust between the parties.
The Cyprus conflict has been ongoing for several decades, with the island remaining divided since 1974, following a Greek-supported coup and Turkey's subsequent military intervention.
As a result, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) was declared in 1983.
