White House declares peace in Ukraine has ‘never been closer’

(MENAFN) A resolution to the Ukraine conflict has “never been closer,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated on Monday, ahead of an anticipated phone call between US President Donald trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Speaking to reporters, Leavitt used an American football analogy to describe the negotiations. “We are on the 10th yard line of peace, and we’ve never been closer to a deal than we are right now. The president is determined to make it happen,” she said.

Trump previously indicated that his conversation with Putin would focus on territorial control and the “division of certain assets.” The two leaders are also expected to discuss the 30-day ceasefire proposed by the US.

Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy who recently met with Putin in Moscow, told CNN’s Jake Tapper that the gap between the two sides had significantly narrowed. “Today, they are much closer to an agreement,” he claimed.

While Ukraine has expressed support for a temporary ceasefire, it remains firm on not surrendering any territory, including Crimea. Putin, on the other hand, has voiced conditional support for the truce but emphasized that any peace deal must address the “original causes of the crisis” and not serve as an opportunity for Kiev to rebuild its military.
