Man Suspected of Planning to Murder Colombian President Gets Killed
(MENAFN) A man accused of plotting to murder Colombian Leader Gustavo Petro was announced dead during a security operation, authorities confirmed on Monday.
Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez announced that Santander Franco Jimenez, also known as "Omar," a member of Clan del Golfo—a right-wing paramilitary group turned trafficking gang—was neutralized in an operation in the rural region of El Dovio in the Valle del Cauca area.
Jimenez was wanted for several crimes, such as his alleged involvement in the assassination plot against Petro.
Sanchez stated that security forces seized a great amount of weapons as well as ammo during the operation.
He stated: "Our military forces and national police neutralized one of the criminals who attempted to take the life of our president. The individual killed was also responsible for numerous terrorist acts against police and civilians."
In addition, several Clan del Golfo camps were discovered then destroyed as part of the current operations.
On February 19, President Petro had revealed that drug cartels were plotting to assassinate him.
