Torkham Border Crossing Remains Closed For 7Th Day, Causing Major Trade Disruptions

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) The Torkham border crossing has remained closed for the seventh consecutive day, with a long queue of trucks carrying goods waiting for the route to reopen.

According to the Associated Press, more than 5,000 trucks carrying fruits and vegetables have been halted on both sides of the border. Pakistani authorities have stated that the closure of the crossing has caused a loss of over $12 million to traders. Additionally, transportation issues have increased, making the situation extremely difficult for both traders and travelers.

The Torkham crossing has been closed since last Friday night by Pakistan. Sources indicate that the closure occurred after Pakistani forces attempted to install a signpost, which, following tensions with the Taliban, escalated into the construction of a Taliban outpost. This led to clashes between the two sides.

In recent days, several rounds of negotiations have taken place between border officials from the Taliban and Pakistan to reopen the crossing. However, these efforts have so far been unsuccessful.

The closure of this route has not only caused financial losses but also negatively affected trade relations and the livelihoods of many citizens on both sides of the border.

The ongoing closure of Torkham highlights the fragility of border relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan, especially in areas of trade and security. Despite multiple negotiations, a resolution has yet to be reached, leaving both nations in a state of uncertainty.

This situation underscores the need for more effective diplomatic efforts to address cross-border tensions and to find a long-term solution that ensures stability, commerce, and the well-being of the affected populations.
