Gaza faces water shortage due to Israeli-imposed siege

(MENAFN) On Sunday, Municipal officials in Gaza raised alarms of an impending water shortage crisis that might result in widespread thirst due to Israel’s ongoing border crossing blockage and the risk of cutting off water supply.

The Gaza Municipality stated: “The Mekorot water line supplies Gaza City with approximately 70% of its daily water needs.”

“If the water supply from this line is cut off, it could lead to a major water shortage, threatening the lives of civilians and causing a deterioration in public health, with the potential spread of diseases,” the statement cautioned.

Mekorot, a water company under Israeli control, remains one of the key sources of water for Gaza. Its operations have become a critical aspect of the Israeli-imposed siege.

After the conclusion of the initial stage of a ceasefire and inmate swap deal that took effect in the beginning of March, Israel shut down all crossings into Gaza and prevented the access of humanitarian supplies.
