Starmer reaffirms UK against fresh nuclearization of Europe

(MENAFN) UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reaffirmed Britain’s opposition to the spread of nuclear weapons, responding to increasing calls for nuclear proliferation in Europe.

During a press conference on Saturday, Starmer stated, “Our position is to do everything we can to prevent any increase in the availability of nuclear weapons.” His remarks come as French President Emmanuel macron recently suggested extending France’s nuclear umbrella to other EU nations, citing concerns over a potential US withdrawal from Europe. Macron described Russia as a “threat to France and Europe,” a claim that Moscow denounced as hostile.

Polish President Andrzej Duda has also advocated for the US to station nuclear weapons in Poland under NATO’s nuclear-sharing arrangement. Currently, American nuclear weapons are hosted in Germany, Italy, Belgium, Türkiye, and the Netherlands.

However, US Vice President J.D. Vance dismissed the idea of moving nuclear arms further east, stating he would be “shocked” if President Donald Trump agreed to such a move. He accused figures like former US President Joe Biden of “sleepily walking us into a nuclear conflict.”

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov condemned Macron’s nuclear-sharing proposal as a direct threat against Russia, warning that such rhetoric only escalates tensions.
