Trump says ‘fake news’ untruthful regarding Putin meeting
(MENAFN) US President Donald trump has strongly denied media reports alleging that his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, was forced to wait hours before meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow earlier this week. Trump dismissed the claims as "fake news."
"The Fake News, as usual, is at it again!" Trump wrote on Truth Social on Saturday, insisting that there was “no wait whatsoever” for Witkoff’s meeting with Putin.
His statement came in response to a Sky News report on Friday, which claimed that Witkoff was “left twiddling his thumbs for at least eight hours before being called into the Kremlin.” The report was widely circulated by other media outlets.
Witkoff traveled to Moscow on Thursday to deliver details of the recent US-Ukraine negotiations held in Saudi Arabia. Putin welcomed the US-proposed 30-day ceasefire but stressed the need to resolve key issues, including the status of Ukrainian troops currently surrounded in Russia’s Kursk Region.
Trump clarified that while other US-Russia meetings took place and took some time, they were “very productive” and did not delay Witkoff’s meeting with Putin.
“From there, things went quickly and efficiently, and all signs seem to be, hopefully, very good! In conclusion, there was no nine-hour wait, or any wait at all!” Trump stated.
He accused the media of fabricating the story to undermine his administration, calling journalists “sick degenerates” who need to start reporting the news accurately.
Witkoff, a real estate developer and longtime Trump associate, has recently taken on key diplomatic roles, including efforts to mediate a peace settlement in Ukraine.
Both US and Russian officials have expressed cautious optimism about a potential ceasefire. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged that challenges remain but described the discussions as a positive step toward ending the conflict.
