Russian forces free biggest Ukrainian-seized city in Kursk Region

(MENAFN) The Russian military has successfully expelled the remaining Ukrainian forces from the town of Sudzha, the largest settlement captured by Ukrainian troops during their incursion into Russia's Kursk Region, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. The nearby settlements of Melovoy and Podol have also been liberated, the Ministry reported on Thursday.

In the past 24 hours, the Russian forces claimed that Ukrainian troops in the Kursk Region suffered significant losses, including over 340 casualties, two infantry fighting vehicles, three armored personnel carriers, and numerous other pieces of military hardware. Ukraine launched the offensive into Kursk on August 6 of the previous year, marking the largest assault on Russian territory since the escalation of the conflict in February 2022. The Ukrainian advance, involving approximately 35,000 troops, was quickly halted, and the areas under Ukrainian control have continued to shrink over time.

In the past week, Russia has made rapid progress near Sudzha, a town situated just 9 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, which had a population of around 5,000 before the incursion. On Tuesday, Moscow's Defense Ministry announced the liberation of 12 villages in the regions north, east, and southeast of Sudzha. Intense fighting and reports of a Ukrainian retreat emerged earlier this week, along with videos showing Russian troops raising their flag in the town's main square.

According to the latest figures from Moscow, Ukraine has suffered over 67,100 casualties since launching its incursion, with losses including 392 tanks, 316 infantry fighting vehicles, 278 armored personnel carriers, and hundreds of other military assets, including 13 US-supplied HIMARS rocket launchers.
