Joint Chinese, Russian, Iranian Statement: Unilateral Sanctions Against Iran Must End
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
BEIJING, March 14 (KUNA) -- diplomacy and dialogue based on mutual respect must prevail instead of unilateral and illegal sanctions against Iran on its nuclear file, said a joint Chinese, Russian, Iranian statement on Friday.
This joint statement came after a meeting of top Foreign Affairs officials of each respective country held in Beijing.
According to Chinese CCTV, the statement called for removing the core obstacles in reaching a settlement on the Iranian file, saying that sanctions and threats were not the way forward.
It stressed the importance of UNSC 2231, which endorsed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the nuclear program of Iran, saying it was not wise to escalate the situation.
China and Russia welcomed Iran's reaffirmation on the peaceful applications of its nuclear program, which Tehran vowed would not be used to develop nuclear weapons capabilities.
The statement expressed support towards Iran cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reiterating respect towards Iran plans to pursue peaceful nuclear applications within the context of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Meanwhile, the statement indicated that the trilateral meeting in Beijing had touched on regional and international developments as well as cooperation amongst the three countries especially within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the BRICS intergovernmental organization.
