Russian army frees many sites in Kursk Region

(MENAFN) The Russian Defense Ministry has reported significant territorial gains in Kursk Region, reclaiming 12 villages from Ukrainian forces in a swift offensive.

According to the ministry’s daily briefing on Tuesday, Russian troops have retaken over 100 square kilometers in the past 24 hours. The liberated settlements include Agronom, Bogdanovka, Bondarevka, Dmitryukov, Zazulevka, Ivashkovsky, Kolmakov, Kubatkin, Martynovka, Mikhailovka, Pravda, and Yuzhny.

The advance suggests that Russian forces are closing in on the town of Sudzha from multiple directions, while Ukrainian troops are retreating southwest across the river of the same name. Reports indicate that Moscow’s forces have already entered Sudzha, the largest settlement in Kursk Region still under Kiev’s control.

Ukraine’s position in the region has weakened significantly over the past week, with its northern flank collapsing. It remains uncertain whether Ukrainian forces will attempt to hold their ground in Sudzha or withdraw entirely.

The Ukrainian military has been struggling with supply issues, as Russian forces have steadily disrupted its logistics. The remaining Ukrainian troops now rely on a single cross-border road, which has been subjected to continuous drone and artillery strikes.

Kiev initially launched its incursion into Kursk Region in August, capturing Sudzha and several surrounding villages within days. However, Russian counteroffensives have steadily pushed back Ukrainian forces, reclaiming more than two-thirds of the territory they initially seized.

The operation has been costly for Ukraine, with Russian Defense Ministry estimates putting Ukrainian casualties at 66,550. Additionally, nearly 400 Ukrainian tanks, over 300 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), 272 armored personnel carriers (APCs), and more than 2,000 other armored vehicles have been destroyed or captured during the conflict in Kursk Region.
