Azerbaijan's energy sector continues to expand its reach, reinforcing its role as a key supplier of natural gas to Europe. During a joint press conference with North Macedonian President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev highlighted the country's growing energy partnerships, stating, “Azerbaijan currently exports Natural gas to 12 countries, and geographically, our customers are located in Eurasia.”

President Aliyev further emphasized that“ten out of these 12 countries are European nations. Last year, Azerbaijan exported 25 billion cubic meters of gas to foreign markets. Of course, we produce more than this.” He underlined the strategic importance of Azerbaijani gas for Europe, pointing to the Declaration on Strategic Partnership in the field of energy between the European Union and Azerbaijan, signed in Baku about three years ago, as a testament to the strong energy ties between both sides.

“Today, Azerbaijani gas contributes to the energy security of many European countries,” Aliyev added, stressing that“we have always attached great importance to the requests of our European partners. In other words, bilateral cooperation in the energy sector is very important to us, and I do hope that this practical cooperation will pave the way for collaboration in other areas as well.”

What does this mean for Azerbaijan's energy future?

Economist and Member of Parliament of Azerbaijan Vugar Bayramov shared his thoughts with AzerNews , stating that this meeting will contribute to the further deepening of relations between the countries:

"The countries have already started cooperation in the energy sector. Azerbaijani gas was delivered to the North Macedonian market at the end of 2024, and this year energy cooperation will deepen further. Relations between the two countries have been developing further in recent years. North Macedonia is among the European countries that want to further expand energy cooperation with Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan, on the other hand, has the opportunity to export more gas to partner countries. Azerbaijan's gas exports to Europe increased by 8.6 percent in 2024, reaching 12.9 billion cubic meters. Last year, 50.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas were produced in our country. Compared to 2023, production increased by 2 billion cubic meters.

It should be noted that in 2024, for the first time in the history of Azerbaijan, blue gas production exceeded 50 billion cubic meters per year. This means more export opportunities for our country. Currently, Azerbaijan is transporting blue gas to 12 countries in the region.

Blue gas exports not only increase state revenues, but also further strengthen our country's geopolitical position and contribute to the energy security of the region. It strengthens Azerbaijan's role in strengthening the security of the region. This means new opportunities for cooperation with partner countries, including North Macedonia."

With Azerbaijan's gas production reaching new milestones, its role in Europe's energy security continues to expand. As energy cooperation deepens, Baku is further solidifying its position as a key energy supplier to the region.
