US attempts to relax anti-Russia language in G7 document

(MENAFN) The United States has been pushing to tone down language critical of Russia in the final communique of the upcoming G7 foreign ministers’ meeting, Bloomberg reported on Saturday, citing a draft document and sources familiar with the discussions.

The G7, which includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US, is set to convene next week in Charlevoix, Canada. According to the report, the administration of US President Donald trump is advocating for stronger wording on China while seeking to soften statements regarding Russia. Specifically, Washington wants to remove the word “sanctions” from the final statement and modify references to Russia’s ability to “maintain its war” by replacing it with the phrase “earn revenue.”

The US has also reportedly rejected Canada’s proposal to create a task force to track the so-called "shadow fleet" of oil tankers, which Western nations claim Russia is using to bypass energy sanctions. In the final weeks of President Joe Biden’s administration, Washington blacklisted over 180 vessels suspected of illegally transporting Russian oil. Moscow has denied operating a shadow fleet and maintains that all Western sanctions are unlawful.

Since taking office, Trump has moved away from his predecessor’s policy of isolating Russia and has resumed direct talks with Moscow, which had been suspended since 2022. He has emphasized diplomacy as his main strategy for ending the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and has expressed a willingness to lift sanctions as part of peace negotiations.

Last week, Trump suggested that sanctions on Russia could be eased “at some point” during peace talks, though he later warned of imposing a new round of “large-scale” sanctions if a ceasefire and final peace agreement were not reached.

Moscow has repeatedly stated that Western sanctions have failed to isolate or weaken Russia and have instead caused economic harm to the nations that imposed them.
