Bridge falls apart murdering workers in S-Korea
(MENAFN) A tragic incident occurred at a highway construction site south of Seoul on Tuesday, where four workers were killed, and six others were injured when a bridge structure collapsed. The accident took place around 9:50 am local time in Anseong, about 65 kilometers from Seoul, during work on the Seoul-Sejong expressway.
The collapse happened when five 50-meter-long steel beams supporting the bridge fell one after the other after being lifted by a crane. Ten workers were trapped under the debris, with one of the victims recovered by 2:20 pm local time. The rescue operation was concluded shortly after. Dramatic footage showed the moment the bridge collapsed, sending dust and debris into the air. Emergency responders, including firefighters, worked diligently to rescue those trapped.
Hyundai Engineering, the construction company involved, apologized for the tragedy and pledged full cooperation with authorities in investigating the incident. The acting president of South Korea, Choi Sang-mok, called for the mobilization of resources to locate any missing persons and implement safety measures to prevent further accidents.
The cause of the collapse remains under investigation, adding to growing concerns over construction safety in South Korea, which has seen a number of deadly incidents in recent years.
