Slovak Premier instructs EU to ‘stop crying’ over Russia-US discussions
(MENAFN) Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has sharply criticized the European Union for its attempts to position itself as a "peacemaker" in the Ukraine conflict, despite not prioritizing a ceasefire for the past three years. Fico accused the EU of “crying” and blaming others for being excluded from US-Russia peace discussions.
Fico has long been a vocal critic of Western policies regarding Ukraine, with his government taking a stand against the EU's support for Kiev. In May 2024, he survived an assassination attempt by a pro-Ukraine activist. During a speech on Wednesday, he condemned EU leaders for three years of strategic failures, arguing that Western military and financial aid to Ukraine only prolonged the war without achieving any meaningful progress.
He pointed out that with the exception of Slovakia and Hungary, the EU supported the war without acknowledging that a conventional war against Russia could not be won. Fico criticized Brussels for pushing an unrealistic strategy, which he claimed left Ukraine weaker and the EU sidelined in peace talks.
The recent high-level talks between Russia and the US in Riyadh further frustrated the EU, which felt excluded from the discussions. Fico expressed frustration that the EU was left out of peace negotiations, urging the bloc to convene a summit to discuss its role. He accused the EU of hypocrisy, noting that the same leaders who had rejected ceasefire talks were now trying to position themselves as peace brokers as US-Russia negotiations progressed.
Fico, who took office in 2023, has consistently opposed EU military support for Ukraine, halted Slovakia’s military aid, and has advocated for peace talks and opposing Ukraine’s NATO membership.
