Media reports US embassies instructed to decrease workers

(MENAFN) The US State Department has instructed embassies worldwide to prepare for staff reductions, according to reports from ABC News and Reuters on Thursday. diplomatic missions have been advised to consider cutting both American and locally employed staff by 10%. Senior embassy officials have been asked to compile detailed lists of all employees, including tenured, untenured, and temporary staff.

This directive comes ahead of President Donald Trump’s signing of an executive order titled "One Voice for America’s Foreign Relations," which mandates that State Department staff align with the administration’s foreign policy priorities. The order stresses the need for an “exceptional workforce of patriots.”

As part of broader cost-cutting measures, the Trump administration is also reviewing the future of various US consulates and diplomatic posts worldwide. Consulates in Europe, Canada, Mexico, and the Pacific Islands are among those under review, with officials evaluating their relevance to Trump's "America First" agenda, particularly in areas like diplomacy, military contacts, and intelligence gathering.

These steps are part of President Trump’s ongoing efforts to streamline the federal workforce and reduce government expenses. The administration has already proposed a 10% reduction in government employees and is working with the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, to trim significant costs from the federal budget. DOGE has already implemented cuts by dismantling organizations like USAID and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), and imposing restrictions on NIH grants.
