Media reports Zelensky sanctioning main political opponent

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has reportedly sanctioned former President Pyotr Poroshenko, according to local media. The sanctions are linked to treason charges against Poroshenko, though specific details on the restrictions remain unclear. The decision, made by Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (SNBO), followed a meeting between Zelensky and SNBO members.

Zelensky confirmed that a decision was reached during the meeting, aimed at "protecting the state and restoring justice." He emphasized the need to hold accountable those who have "destroyed" Ukraine’s national security and allegedly assisted Russia. While Zelensky mentioned “billions earned by selling Ukraine,” he did not name anyone specifically.

Poroshenko has denounced the sanctions as “illegal” and a “provocation,” accusing Zelensky of personally ordering the move. He also claimed that Ukrainian authorities barred him from attending the Munich Security Conference in mid-February.

Poroshenko, who led Ukraine from 2014 to 2019, has been a vocal critic of Zelensky, accusing him of authoritarianism and failing to maintain effective communication with international leaders, including US President Donald Trump.
