Trump announces plans to preserve ‘back to plastic’ initiative
(MENAFN) President Donald trump has announced plans to sign an executive order next week aimed at reversing former President Joe Biden’s initiative to phase out single-use plastic products in federal buildings by 2027. Trump made the announcement on his social media platform, Truth Social, declaring, “I will be signing an Executive Order next week ending the ridiculous Biden push for Paper Straws, which don’t work. BACK TO PLASTIC!”
Trump has long criticized paper straws, often highlighting their tendency to disintegrate during use. During a 2020 rally, he remarked on the poor functionality of paper straws. In 2019, his campaign sold red, reusable plastic straws, emphasizing the failure of liberal paper alternatives, which raised nearly $500,000.
At a rally in Iowa in January, Trump mocked the use of paper straws wrapped in cellophane, claiming it was an example of the country’s irrationality.
In July 2024, the Biden administration rolled out a plan to phase out single-use plastics across federal operations, aiming to eliminate items like plastic straws by 2027, with the goal of full elimination by 2035. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) spearheaded the initiative, encouraging the use of more sustainable materials. Several states, including California and New York, had already implemented bans on plastic straws.
