US lawmaker raises concerns over Biden spending USD10mn in taxpayer funds on ‘transgender mice’

(MENAFN) Republican Representative Nancy Mace has raised concerns over the Biden administration’s spending of approximately $10 million in taxpayer funds on experiments involving “transgender lab rats.” During a House Oversight Committee hearing, Mace criticized these funds as an example of misuse of taxpayer dollars. The hearing, titled “Transgender Lab Rats and Poisoned Puppies: Oversight of Taxpayer Funded Animal Cruelty,” featured testimony from the White Coat Waste Project, an organization that exposes animal testing.

Mace questioned why the federal government was using taxpayer money for "gender-affirming care" in animal research, including experiments on transgender mice, rats, and monkeys that involved painful and invasive surgeries and hormone treatments. She denounced the Biden administration’s push for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, arguing that the White House’s focus on gender issues led to the disturbing practice of modifying animal genitals.

The White Coat Waste Project reported that the National Institutes of Health had spent over $240 million on similar transgender animal experiments over recent years, including ongoing projects totaling $26 million. Mace pointed out that the U.S. government spends over $20 billion annually on animal research, with examples like a study to test if female rats receiving testosterone were more likely to overdose on a date rape drug. The criticisms highlight ongoing debates over government-funded research and the allocation of taxpayer dollars for controversial projects.
