Chinese Cargo Ship Runs Aground in Russia's Far East

(MENAFN) A Chinese cargo ship, the An Yang 2, ran aground early Sunday in the Sakhalin region of Russia’s Far East, according to local authorities. Sakhalin Governor Valery Limarenko reported the incident on Telegram, stating that the ship ran aground overnight in the shallow waters of the island’s southwestern Nevelsky district, located just north of Japan’s second-largest island, Hokkaido.

Limarenko confirmed that no fuel spill was reported in the area, and there was no threat to the safety or health of the crew, who remain in constant communication with authorities. In response to the incident, a high alert regime was implemented in Nevelsky. However, Limarenko noted that rescue and diving teams are unable to approach the vessel due to a strong storm.

The Russian Federal Agency for Sea and Inland Water Transport informed the state news agency TASS that the ship is not carrying fuel oil but is loaded with 1,000 tons of coal. Plans for unloading or removing the vessel from the shallows will be made once weather conditions improve.
