Landslide in Southwestern China Leaves One Dead, 28 Missing

(MENAFN) At least one person has been confirmed dead, and 28 others are missing following a landslide in southwestern China, according to the Beijing-based Xinhua News. The landslide occurred on Saturday in Junlian County, located in Yibin city, Sichuan province, and the situation remains dire as the landslide continues, complicating rescue efforts.

Two individuals were also injured in the disaster, and nearly 400 local residents have been evacuated from the affected area. Provincial authorities have mobilized around 1,000 personnel, including armed police, firefighters, and emergency response teams, to assist in the rescue operations.

The landslide has turned into debris flows due to persistent rainfall and the region's geological conditions. Preliminary assessments show that more than 100,000 cubic meters (over 3.5 million cubic feet) of debris have accumulated, covering a distance of around 1.2 kilometers (0.7 miles). The rescue teams continue their efforts, working under challenging conditions to locate survivors.
