QF Hosts Global Platform To Enhance Youth Leadership
DOHA: Qatar Foundation hosted the annual THIMUN Qatar Conference, together 80 local and international schools, including 37 from within Qatar and 17 from abroad.
The event provided students with a dynamic platform to engage with peers from around the world in a Model United Nations (MUN) environment, fostering a deeper understanding of global challenges.
As a student-led platform, THIMUN Qatar allows students take full responsibility for organising and managing the conference. Participants assume the roles of diplomats, representing nations and non-governmental organizations, as they engage in high-level discussions on critical global issues.
This hands-on experience helps them develop essential leadership, communication, and negotiation skills while addressing some of the world's most pressing concerns.
Throughout the conference, delegates participated in intensive sessions covering a wide array of critical topics, including disarmament, legal affairs, human rights, economic development, and international security. A highlight of the event was a simulation of the International Court of Justice, offering students a practical introduction to international law, diplomacy, and strategic negotiation.
Sarah Al Hajri, Director of Student Affairs and Community Engagement at Qatar Foundation's Pre-University Education, emphasised the significance of the conference, saying,“THIMUN Qatar is a powerful platform that embodies diversity, diplomacy, and leadership. It provides students with a unique space to refine their debating and negotiation skills while fostering empathy, collaboration, and cross-cultural understanding, essential qualities for the leaders of tomorrow.”
Al Hajri highlighted the long-term impact of THIMUN Qatar, noting that many past delegates have gone on to leadership roles in their academic and professional journeys.
“One of the most remarkable aspects of THIMUN Qatar is its ability to shape leadership skills in students by immersing them in real-world challenges. Through simulations of international diplomacy, participants develop confidence, strategic thinking.”
As an integral part of Qatar Foundation Schools (QFS), THIMUN Qatar is deeply embedded in QF's educational vision.
Al Hajri noted the expansion of MUN clubs across QF schools, emphasizing their role in preparing students for meaningful participation in THIMUN,“These clubs play a fundamental role in developing students' ability to articulate their thoughts, think critically, and understand the complexities of global issues.
“They serve as a training ground where students refine their public speaking, negotiation, and leadership skills before stepping onto the THIMUN stage.”
Al Hajri also praised the prestigious status of THIMUN Qatar among Model United Nations conferences worldwide, highlighting that only a select few receive accreditation from the THIMUN Foundation or are officially organized by it. This recognition makes THIMUN Qatar a globally respected platform that fosters high-level diplomatic engagement and leadership development.
She urged parents to support their children in joining their school's MUN club, describing it as an invaluable experience that nurtures confidence, global awareness, and a sense of responsibility.“I have personally witnessed the transformative impact MUN has on the student. It not only enhances their ability to engage in intellectual discussions but also strengthens their character, decision-making, and leadership skills,” she added.
“THIMUN is more than a conference; it is a journey that shapes young leaders, and the earlier students start, the greater their growth and impact in their communities and beyond.”
Since its launch in 2011, THIMUN Qatar has welcomed over 23,000 students from Qatar, the region, and around the world, reflecting its vital role in developing public speaking, negotiation, and critical thinking skills. As part of Qatar Foundation's 30-year commitment to fostering youth leadership, THIMUN Qatar continues to provide an unparalleled opportunity or students to engage in global dialogue and diplomacy.
