Sudan’s Army Chief Announces Plans for Transitional Government Amid Military Gains
(MENAFN) Sudan’s army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, announced on Saturday that a transitional government would be formed soon, as the military continues to make significant strides against rival paramilitaries in the capital and central regions of the war-torn country.
Speaking from Port Sudan, the country’s de facto capital, Burhan outlined plans for the new administration, which he described as either a "caretaker government" or a "war government," and emphasized that it would be made up of "independent" experts.
“We are seeking to form a government in the coming period that will complete the tasks of transition,” Burhan stated.
The primary goal of the new government, according to Burhan, would be to finalize military operations and to "cleanse all of Sudan" of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
He also indicated that the government would lay the foundations for a larger political transition, with preparations underway for national elections. Burhan noted that a constitutional document would be finalized before a prime minister is appointed, assuring that he would not "interfere in his tasks or duties."
