US court dismisses Trump’s command on trans prisoners

(MENAFN) A US judge has temporarily blocked an executive order by President Donald trump that sought to transfer transgender inmates to men's prisons and halt their access to medical treatments for gender transitions. The order, signed on Trump’s first day back in office, directed the Bureau of Prisons to house inmates according to their biological sex and cut funding for certain transgender medical care.

The ruling came after three transgender inmates filed a lawsuit, claiming the policy would endanger their lives by denying them necessary healthcare. US District Judge Royce Lamberth, in a decision made on Tuesday, determined that the plaintiffs would likely succeed in proving the policy unconstitutional. The inmates had previously been housed in women's units but were moved to segregated units with other transgender women while awaiting transfer to male facilities.

The plaintiffs expressed fear about the potential transfers, citing the elevated risk of violence and the negative impact on their health without proper medical care. Lamberth agreed with the argument that the inmates faced a high risk of physical and sexual harm and would suffer severe symptoms without the necessary treatment. The judge ruled that the public interest in transferring the plaintiffs to male facilities was minimal at best.

This marks the second federal court decision blocking Trump's gender-related orders, which assert that there are only two genders—male and female. Trump’s policies have sparked ongoing legal challenges, with many civil rights and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups criticizing his administration’s rollback of transgender rights and protections.
