Baltic States Turn Off Russian Electricity

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Feb 7 (KUNA) -- EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas announced on Friday that the Baltic States - Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia - will permanently disconnect from the Russian power grid starting tomorrow (Saturday) 8th.
In a post on X, Kallas described the disconnection as a victory for "freedom and European unity," adding that "Russia can no longer use energy as a tool of blackmail."
The Baltic States - Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia - will end their energy ties with Russia on Saturday in a Politically charged move that cuts their Soviet-era energy connections with Moscow.
The move is seen as symbolic, considering the three countries have not purchased electricity from Russia or Belarus since May 2022.
The Baltic States were once part of the Soviet Union but are now members of the European Union and key NATO members on the border with Russia. (end)
