Ukraine Not In Talks With EU On Extending Russian Gas Transit Stefanishyna

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Ukraine is not engaged in any negotiations with the EU regarding the possibility of extending Russian gas transit, as this issue remains a matter of internal discussions among certain EU member states and the European Commission.

Olga Stefanishyna, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration and Minister of Justice, stated this during a conversation with journalists, Ukrinform reports.

According to Stefanishyna, Ukraine understands that the expiration of the Russian gas transit contract does not impact the EU's energy security and aligns with the EU's goal of completely phasing out Russian gas by 2027.

"There is a specific group of EU countries for whom this issue [extending Russian gas transit] is important. However, this is a subject of dialogue between these countries and the European Commission. If there are any formal requests to Ukraine as a result of this dialogue, we will respond accordingly," Stefanishyna said.

She added that no agreements on extending Russian gas transit are being discussed, "neither from our side nor from Brussels."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on January 25 that Ukraine was ready to transport gas from Azerbaijan.

The transit contract for transporting Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine's gas transmission system expired on December 31, 2024.
