Democracy Forum Condemns Threats Against Journalist Munizae Jahangir

(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) ISLAMABAD - The Forum for Digital Rights and Democracy (FDRD) strongly condemned the violent threats and intimidation directed at senior journalist and Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) Co-Chairperson Munizae Jahangir.

In a press release, the forum said these attacks not only target press freedom but also violate the constitutionally protected right to free expression. It described the threats as a shameful attempt to silence independent voices that hold power to account.

Jahangir, widely respected in the media and an inspiration to young female journalists, has been subjected to targeted harassment and threats aimed at undermining her professional integrity and personal safety, the forum said. It added that the threats reflect a growing pattern of hostility toward journalists who speak out on critical issues, particularly those related to religion and blasphemy.

FDRD said attempts to silence journalists through intimidation and violence are unacceptable and must be unequivocally condemned. The forum emphasized that journalist safety is not just an individual concern but a broader issue affecting democratic values, human rights, and the public's right to information.

The group called on authorities to take immediate and effective action to investigate the threats and hold those responsible accountable. It also urged the government and civil society to work together to foster an environment where journalists can exercise their right to free speech and press freedom without fear.

FDRD expressed full solidarity with Jahangir and others facing threats for speaking truth to power, reaffirming its commitment to defending press freedom and freedom of expression.
