US transfers Indian immigrants back home on army aircraft

(MENAFN) A US military aircraft has repatriated 205 Indian nationals, marking the first time such a flight has been used for deportations to India, according to a US official. The Air Force C-17 Globemaster departed from San Antonio, Texas, and landed in Amritsar, Punjab. This marks the longest distance a military flight has traveled to return illegal immigrants under President Trump’s administration, which has been increasingly stringent on immigration enforcement.

A US embassy representative in New Delhi stressed that the US is committed to enforcing its border laws, sending a clear message against illegal immigration. While this is the first military flight of its kind, India and the US have previously collaborated to deport Indian nationals, including using charter flights for repatriations.

This development follows discussions between US President Trump and Indian Prime Minister Modi, with immigration issues set to feature prominently in upcoming talks. India's External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, also emphasized India's stance against unlawful migration, reaffirming its commitment to facilitate the legal return of its citizens.
