UNRWA: Situation In Jenin Camp At Catastrophic Level
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
GENEVA, Feb 4 (KUNA) -- Director of Communications at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) Juliette Touma, warned on Tuesday about the devastating situation in Jenin camp.
Israeli Occupation airstrikes have destroyed large parts of the camp making life there nearly impossible.
"It is estimated that about 100 houses were destroyed or heavily damaged, all residents of the camp according to our reports have left the camp as of this morning," said Touma during a press conference.
Jenin camp is home to an estimated 30,000 people with rapidly worsening humanitarian conditions with 13 schools in the camp and surrounding areas remaining closed, affecting over 5,000 students, added Touma.
About 4,200 aid trucks had entered Gaza under the ceasefire agreement but warned that hundreds of additional trucks remain stuck outside Egypt and Jordan, as no new supplies have been allowed since last Thursday, stressed Touma.
Touma underscored the critical role of UNRWA's health teams, noting that over 1,100 UNRWA healthcare workers are still providing primary health services across Gaza, and conducting around 17,000 medical consultations daily.
"Stabilizing Gaza requires a continuous flow of commercial supplies, not just humanitarian aid," noted Touma.
She pointed out that the agency has long faced chronic financial instability, an issue that UNRWA's Commissioner-General has repeatedly highlighted, following Sweden's decision to cut funding.
Despite these severe challenges, Touma reaffirmed UNRWA's commitment to continuing its mission. (end)
