Trump announces negotiations with Russia, Ukraine ‘going pretty well’

(MENAFN) US President Donald trump announced that talks with both Russia and Ukraine regarding the ongoing conflict are progressing positively. Speaking to reporters, Trump mentioned that the US has been busy addressing multiple global crises, including discussions with Ukraine and Russia, and that meetings with both sides are going "pretty well."

Trump's special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, suggested that both Kyiv and Moscow would need to make concessions to achieve peace. He noted that Ukrainian President Zelensky was considering modifying his stance on territorial concessions, while Russian President Putin would also have to soften his position. Kellogg expressed optimism, estimating that a resolution could come within months rather than years.

Kellogg also indicated that the US is pushing for Ukraine to hold elections, despite martial law preventing elections from being held since Zelensky’s term expired in May. Meanwhile, Russian officials have shown a willingness to engage in talks, although they caution that substantial agreements are yet to be reached.

Reports suggest that Trump's potential peace plan for Ukraine could include a ceasefire along current front lines, the establishment of a demilitarized zone patrolled by European troops, and Ukraine delaying NATO membership for up to 20 years. However, Russia insists that peace can only be achieved if Ukraine agrees to permanent neutrality, demilitarization, and territorial recognition.
