Canadians voice detest of US national anthem

(MENAFN) During an NHL game in Ottawa on Saturday, Canadian hockey fans booed the US national anthem as a form of protest against the trade policies of US President Donald Trump. The incident occurred at the Canadian Tire Center before the Ottawa Senators played the Minnesota Wild. As Canadian singer Mandia performed the "Star-Spangled Banner," many spectators jeered the anthem. Despite the boos, Mandia completed the performance without incident. However, the mood shifted when she sang "O Canada," which was met with cheers and applause.

The protest comes in response to the recent imposition of a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports by Trump, along with a 10% tariff on Chinese goods. Trump framed these tariffs as a reaction to concerns over illegal immigration and drug trafficking. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau criticized the decision, vowing that Canada would not back down and would retaliate with tariffs on a range of American products, including beer, wine, and home appliances.

The tension between the two countries escalated when Trump suggested Canada could become the 51st state, accusing Ottawa of exploiting the US and engaging in unfair trade practices. Trudeau rejected this notion, stating there was no chance the countries would merge. Meanwhile, the Senators defeated the Wild 6-0 in the game.
