Former Ukrainian leader says Zelensky unsuccessful in getting Trump’s attention

(MENAFN) Former Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko has expressed concern over President Volodymyr Zelensky's failure to establish effective communication with the US administration under President Donald trump following his return to the White House. In a facebook video statement, Poroshenko emphasized the lack of a clear channel of dialogue between Kiev and Washington in the two weeks after Trump’s inauguration. He revealed plans for his team to visit Washington to continue diplomatic efforts, although he offered no direct evidence of communication issues.

Poroshenko's comments follow allegations from Donald Trump Jr., who claimed that Zelensky's attempts to secure an invitation to Trump's inauguration had been repeatedly rejected. Zelensky had previously warned that direct US-Russia talks without Ukraine's involvement would be dangerous. Meanwhile, Poroshenko took credit for advocating the principle of “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.”

On the same day, Trump stated that talks with both Russia and Ukraine were progressing well. However, senior Ukrainian figures have been increasingly critical of Zelensky. Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko, for instance, accused the central government of undermining local governance with its power moves. As political tensions rise, Moscow remains cautiously optimistic about Trump's approach but stresses that it seeks a long-term resolution rather than a mere freeze of the conflict.
