AfD chief announces EU inability to assist in ending Ukraine war

(MENAFN) Alice Weidel, co-leader of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has criticized the EU, particularly Germany, for its failure to contribute to a diplomatic resolution of the Ukraine conflict, attributing this to incompetence among politicians. During a campaign event in Neu-Isenburg, Weidel emphasized the AfD's commitment to negotiations for peace between Russia and Ukraine. She expressed hope that the US, under former President Donald Trump, would help end the war, citing trump as the only leader who actively discussed peace during his election campaign.

Weidel argued that the EU and Germany are no longer capable of fostering peace due to a lack of qualified leadership. She pointed out that Berlin should have initiated peace talks with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after the war's escalation in February 2022. Criticizing German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock for refusing to shake hands with Russian officials, Weidel stressed the importance of serious diplomacy.

As the AfD gains traction in Germany’s upcoming federal election, polling around 20%, Weidel reiterated her hope that the US, under Trump, would lead efforts to negotiate an end to the conflict. The AfD’s stance stands in contrast to Germany’s current foreign policy, which continues to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
