US, Canada reach agreement to delay tariffs for 30 days

(MENAFN) Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday that US President Donald trump has agreed to delay the planned tariffs on Canadian imports for 30 days. Trudeau shared the news via his X account, stating that the delay will give both nations time to work together on border security and combatting the flow of fentanyl into the United States.

Trudeau outlined Canada’s commitments to reinforce the border, including the deployment of new helicopters, advanced technology, and additional personnel. Nearly 10,000 frontline workers will be stationed along the US-Canada border as part of these efforts, he said. Additionally, Canada plans to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, label cartels as terrorists, and establish a joint task force with the US to tackle organized crime, fentanyl trafficking, and money laundering.

The Canadian government also introduced a new intelligence directive focused on organized crime and fentanyl, with a USD200 million funding commitment to support these initiatives. "Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together," Trudeau added, emphasizing the cooperation between the two nations.

Shortly after Trudeau’s announcement, President Trump confirmed the agreement on his Truth Social platform, acknowledging that Canada had committed to ensuring a secure northern border and taking action to stop the influx of fentanyl. Trump emphasized that this collaboration would help protect American communities from the devastating effects of the drug crisis.
