Unemployment rate in Morocco sees slight increase in 2024

(MENAFN) Morocco’s unemployment rate in 2024 rose to 13.3 percent, showing a slight increase from 13 percent in 2023, according to data released on Monday by the government’s Commission for Planning (HCP). The data revealed that the number of unemployed individuals increased by 58,000, bringing the total to 1,638,000 nationwide. The rise in unemployment comes amid various economic pressures facing the country.

The unemployment rate in urban areas remained particularly high at 16.9 percent, while rural areas saw a smaller rise, with the unemployment rate increasing from 6.3 percent to 6.8 percent. This indicates that the challenges of unemployment are felt more acutely in urban centers, where job opportunities can be more competitive. The report also highlighted the significant issue of youth unemployment, which stood at a troubling 36.7 percent among those aged 15-24, reflecting the difficulties young people face in securing stable employment.

Despite these concerning figures, Morocco’s labor market saw the creation of 82,000 new jobs in 2024, offering some optimism for future recovery. The HCP also projected a 3.8 percent GDP growth for Morocco in 2025, driven by expansion in both the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors. This forecast suggests that Morocco’s economy has the potential to recover and generate more employment opportunities in the coming years.
