NATO, UK Agree To Invest More In Defense Industry

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, Feb 3 (KUNA) -- NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Monday that NATO allies need to revive their defence industries to ramp up military production.
In a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Rutte stated that the world has become "increasingly more dangerous" and that more investment in defence is needed.
He explained, "to prevent war, we must spend more," noting that the United Kingdom "understands this instinctively."
Rutte called on the United Kingdom to invest more in defence, especially in its military industry.
He added, "I welcome plans to increase investments in defence because the world has become more dangerous, and 2 percent will not be enough to ensure our security."
He praised the steadfast support the United Kingdom has provided to Ukraine, highlighting the billions of dollars in military and humanitarian aid, as well as vital training and security guarantees.
The Secretary General stressed that allies must not only continue supporting Ukraine but must also intensify their efforts, making it clear that keeping Ukraine in a position of strength remains a priority for NATO.
Rutte also mentioned what he called the "escalating destabilization campaigns" by hostile actors, which have become an increasing threat to the security of the allies.
He emphasized that NATO "must be better equipped to face any threat across all domains, both now and in the future".
For his part, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that the United Kingdom and the European Union "must do all they can to support Ukraine" as the war with Russia continues, and that the United Kingdom will provide more military support this year than ever before. Starmer accused Russia of seeking to target "our values."
NATO and the United Kingdom agreed to invest more in defence, particularly in the defence industry, with both sides emphasizing that increasing production is key to supporting deterrence policy. (end)
