Group of Palestinian patients head to Cairo for medical treatment
(MENAFN) For the first time since May, a group of Palestinian patients and wounded individuals departed the Gaza Strip through the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, heading to Cairo for medical treatment. This move was part of the ceasefire agreement that took effect on May 19.
Approximately 50 sick and injured children, along with their escorts, were transported by buses and ambulances from Gaza to the Egyptian side of the crossing. Al-Qahira News channel reported that two ambulances carrying injured individuals, one suffering from immunodeficiency and the other with a foot amputation, arrived on the Egyptian side. The patients were then transferred to ambulances from the Egyptian Ministry of Health for further treatment.
Mohammed Zaqout, director of hospitals at Gaza’s Ministry of Health, shared in a video statement that the first batch of patients to leave Gaza included 50 children, evacuated from local hospitals for treatment in Egypt. However, he noted that the process of receiving patients in Egyptian hospitals remains unclear. Zaqout also stated that while the current number of patients traveling is small compared to the urgent need, about 6,000 cases are prepared to travel, with approximately 12,000 more requiring immediate medical attention. The European Union had announced the return of its civilian mission at the Rafah crossing last Friday, facilitating the transfer of Palestinians requiring medical care abroad.
