EIB Backs Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production In Germany

(MENAFN- Trend News Agency) BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 30. The European Investment Bank (EIB) and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst are providing 70 million euros in funding to German e-fuel company INERATEC to support the construction of Europe's largest carbon-neutral e-fuel plant in Frankfurt, Trend reports.

The financing includes a 40 million euro venture loan from the EIB, backed by the EU's InvestEU program, and a 30 million euro grant from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst.

Set to open in 2025, the Frankfurt facility will produce up to 2,500 tons of e-fuels and e-chemicals, including sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF). The plant will also refine e-crude oil into certifiable aviation fuel, helping the industry meet EU mandates requiring at least 1.2% synthetic fuel in jet fuel by 2030.

EIB Vice President Nicola Beer emphasized the importance of e-fuels in achieving a net-zero economy, while INERATEC CEO Tim Boeltken highlighted the project as proof that large-scale e-fuel production is now a reality. The investment aligns with the EU's ReFuelEU Aviation initiative and the EIB's commitment to climate-focused financing.
