Emerging technology company DeepSeek sparks debates over competition between China, US in AI development

(MENAFN) The emerging technology company DeepSeek, specializing in artificial intelligence, has sparked debates over the competition between China and the United States in AI development. Many users are flocking to test DeepSeek’s new AI chatbot, which serves as a competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The new AI chatbots from DeepSeek and ChatGPT provide differing answers on sensitive issues related to China, and while the impact on the AI industry remains unclear, it is apparent that answers to sensitive topics are likely censored in China, reflecting the country’s common internet censorship practices.

In 2023, China introduced regulations requiring companies to conduct security reviews and obtain approvals before their products can be launched publicly. For instance, when asked about the meaning of "Winnie the Pooh" in China, the two chatbots provided starkly different responses: ChatGPT explained that in China, Winnie the Pooh is often used as a satirical reference to President Xi Jinping, a comparison made due to the supposed similarity in appearance between the bear and the president. It further explained that the image has been used to criticize or ridicule Xi.

On the other hand, DeepSeek’s chatbot offered a more positive portrayal, stating that Winnie the Pooh is a beloved cartoon character cherished by Chinese children and families, symbolizing joy and friendship. It then abruptly added that the Chinese government is committed to providing a healthy cyberspace for its citizens and ensuring that online content is regulated according to Chinese laws and socialist values, with the goal of protecting national security and social stability.
